How not to reply to abuse mails
All,
I've ran into some problems with a certain ISP after complaining that one of their servers was trying to brute force my servers (multiple machines were being attacked by 1 host). Now I know that is is not a big deal and everyone should have enough security to keep the server from actually being cracked, but I still send abuse mails for each serious try I get (which means interferes with my service). So I send a mail, and if I do not get a reply within an hour or 3 I resend a mail. If by the end of the day I do not receive at least a confirmation that they are looking into the problem I call them. This was their reply after the call. Actually it's the lamest answer I ever got and it's rude! My response is to block the whole range of the ISP on all my servers.
Yeah right.Do you have nothing else to do? We have over 10.000 servers in our network, so please don't annoy us 3 times a day with the same abuse. If you want to block the range, be our guest - you are only harming yourself.
For the rest: everything is going the normal procedure and handling abuse requires our customers to answer first.
One would almost think that you only got internet access yesterday... Call me a geek but I expect at least a basic support and a more friendly answer... It's not because the world is filled with scriptkiddies that we should undergo that! Respond and make sure they stop, one day they will succeed and crack into a server of someone that isn't all that technically trained and that person might get into trouble.
